AUMO’s Annual Concerts

2023

AUMO In Vivo

Elder Hall, Elder Conservatorium

Hello and welcome to AUMO in Vivo! 'Vivo' means alive, and this year, we're very excited to bring our music to life and share it with all of you. We have the privilege of supporting the wonderful HAS Foundation as they help children and families to make the most of life.

It's never easy to juggle music with studies, work, family, extracurriculars and everything else that life throws at us. But each year, our members astound us with their dedication and passion for music of all kinds. Tonight's concert is the culmination of many months of hard work, both on stage and behind the scenes.

And of course, we couldn't have pulled this off alone. A huge thank you to our major sponsor, Heart and Vascular, as well as our other sponsors and supporters: Presto Music, MIPS, YouX, Cyrus Vision, and 5mbs and the HAS Foundation.

For the two of us, it's bittersweet to realise that this is to be the last of our AUMO concerts. We've had an incredible six-year journey where we've made new friends, created lifelong memories and kept our passion alive. We look forward to seeing AUMO continue to grow and flourish for years to come! Finally, many thanks to you, the audience, for showing your support and allowing us to share our music with you.

From Medschool With Love

Adelaide Town Hall

It's another year and another AUMO concert. Despite the odds, we are so glad to be back in full capacity to raise funds for our wonderful charity Cystic Fibrosis South Australia. We are so proud of all of our committee members for putting this event together, and our performers who have gone to endless rehearsals. We are always blown away by everyone balancing work, research, study, social commitments, domestic duties and AUMO, attending placement, lectures, tutorials, often with very little sleep!

Personally, AUMO has played a massive part in our lives - not only keeping the arts alive alongside medicine so we didn't have to pick one, but also fostering friendships between year levels that will hopefully last well beyond our years in medical school. Thank you to our sponsors without whom this would not be possible; MIPS, GPEX, Presto Music, Adelaide University Union, Cyrus Vision and of course Cystic Fibrosis South Australia.

And we are so happy that you, yes you, have come along to witness the all the jollity, sometimes stress, silliness and chaos we get up to!

Transforming AUMO

Adelaide Town Hall

All proceeds from 2017's concert tickets, raffles, bake sales and sponsors went to a special collaborative project between the Migrant Health Service and the Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitation Service (STTARS). The two organisations are working together to organise a therapeutic social and cooking group for newly arrived refugee women. Groups such as this one have been shown to promote recovery and resilience in people who have suffered trauma and abuse. As a thank you for the Big Band's performance at GHC, and in recognition of the valuable work carried out by these services, the Australian Medical Student's Association kindly contributed to this project.

The Orchestra's repertoire included pieces from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, Beethoven's Egmont Overture and de Falla's Ritual Fire Dance. This year, Big Band (née Stage Band) featured Shofukan, Joy of Cookin', an arrangement of The Beatles' Blackbird and more. Vocal Ensemble brought Walking on Air and a feel-good ABBA Medley to the stage.

This year we also added 3 new ensembles to our AUMO family! The Chamber orchestra made a comeback with Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, the Jazz dance style came forward with White Stripes by Seven Nation Army, and the Percussion ensemble made an unforgettable debut with their own La La Land Medley!

AUMO in Practice

Adelaide Town Hall

In 2016, the proceeds from AUMO in Practice went towards the startup of an exciting new charity, Keys of Life, headed by Daphne Proietto. For over 17 years, Daphne has been teaching children with disabilities at her home, helping students to achieve extraordinary musical development. With Keys of Life, Daphne hopes to see her work continue, passing on her teaching techniques and developing a network of studios and music schools that can teach special needs children the piano.

For the first time, our annual concert involved guest artists from the charity we were supporting. Daphne's students took to the stage and blew us all away with their incredible poise, skill and musicality. It was such an honour to have them join us. The night was completed by the Pixar & Dreamworks Medley, evoking all the emotions of the hugely enjoyable animated movies brought to the big screen over the last few decades.

Highlights included: The Hymn of Acxiom (Teng), Symphony No. 8 Mov. 1 (Dvorak), Bistro Latino (Jarvis), Recapturing the Hard Vibe + The Hard Road (Hilltop Hoods), Waltz from the Seven Beauties (Garayev) and the Pixar/Dreamworks Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team).

AUMO Outbreak

Adelaide Town Hall

AUMO Outbreak brought to the stage a combination of the ever-loved AUMO ensembles and new initiatives for entertainment. Joined by a performer so very well loved from our childhoods, Peter Combe, performing his foot-tapping classics with the orchestra and choir, it was an incredibly enjoyable experience for everyone in the Town Hall that evening! To finish off the night, AUMO's arranging team once again outdid themselves with a Rock Medley that transported the audience back to some of their all-time favourite tunes!

Highlights included: Unfinished Symphony Mov. 1 (Schubert), Nimrod from the Enigma Variations (Elgar), Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), Ave Maria (Schubert), a Video Games Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team) and the Rock Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team).

2014

Code AUMO

Adelaide Town Hall

Code AUMO featured a unique array of both classical and modern pieces teamed with refreshing arrangements and compositions. When the idea of the AUMO Medley first premiered on stage in AUMOgenesis, it was hugely well received as a delightfully creative end to the evening and this continued year after year. This year, deciding to innovate further, two of AUMO's finest arrangers, Timothy Wareham and Paaree Senguttuvan, composed their own piece, representing the ultimate fusion of music and medicine - "AUMO's Anatomy", an eclectic musical textbook of the various organ systems of the body!

Highlights included: Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky), Suite from Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev), Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin), Sleep (Whitacre), AUMO choreographed dances (hip-hop, lyrical and choreographers) and AUMO's Anatomy (Wareham, Senguttuvan).

AUMO Infusion

Adelaide Town Hall

AUMO's highly anticipated fifth annual concert was a huge success. Returning once again to the beautiful Adelaide Town Hall, the Adelaide University Medical Orchestra impressed the sold-out audience with a variety of classical and contemporary pieces. Starting the evening with a collaboration with Spanish Harlem in a rendition of Adele's powerful James Bond song, Skyfall, the evening showcased multiple fusions of ensembles and musical styles in light of the concert name.

Highlights included Skyfall (Adele), In the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg), Bye Bye Blackbird (Henderson), The Evolution of the Pianists (created by the pianists of AUMO), Hallelujah I Love Her So (Charles), Sing Sing Sing (Prima), Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), Jupiter - The Bringer of Jollity (Holst), and concluding the evening with the TV Themes Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team).

AUMO On Call

Adelaide Town Hall

AUMO On Call showcased a myriad of works, from classical masterpieces and jazz favourites through to contemporary works and revolutionary projects featuring arrangements by AUMO’s very own members. Creative innovations such as The Pianolympics (an ensemble of pianists) and the Pop Medley enhanced the variety of the evening amidst the larger ensemble performances.

Highlights included the 1812 Overture (Tchaikovsky), Symphony No. 25 (Mozart), El Tango De Roxanne (from Moulin Rouge), Requiem for a Dream (Mansell), The Pianolympics (created by the pianists of AUMO), spectacular vocal pieces, jazz band classics, hip-hop, contemporary/lyrical dance and the colossal Broadway Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team).

AUMO In Operation

Michael Murray Centre, Westminster School

The performance of AUMO in Operation was an astonishing combination of music, multimedia, drama and the creative arts. Building on the successes of the prior two concerts, AUMO in Operation strove yet again to creatively present the spectrum of music in all its genres and manifestations, combining music, multimedia, drama and the creative arts. The evening culminated in the AUMO medley, an enormous all-ensemble encompassing performance rapidly being established as one of the most popular AUMO concert traditions!

Highlights included The Voyage II: Distant Empires (composed by AUMO member, Paaree Senguttuvan), When I Get You Alone (Thicke), The Chicken (Ellis), Requiem in D minor (Mozart) in collaboration with the Adelaide University Choral Society, the return of the Hip Hop Crew and the Music Through the Ages Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team).

The AUMO Experiment

Adelaide Town Hall

In 2010, the Adelaide University Medical Orchestra presented The AUMO Experiment.

Under the soaring roof of the Adelaide Town Hall, seating 900 people, AUMO performed a repertoire notable for its huge variety and creative interpretation. It was truly a night to remember and a very memorable experience for performers and audience alike. The money raised was used to build a playground and garden area at the recently built Parenting Centre at the Tullawon Health Service in the Yalata community.

Highlights included Carmina Burana (Orff) in collaboration with the Adelaide University Choral Society, Fly Me to the Moon (Sinatra), Phantom of the Opera (Lloyd Webber), and a hugely entertaining Disney Medley (arranged by AUMO's arranging team).
